When it comes to gentle sleep training and creating a calming sleep environment for your baby, one of the most commonly asked questions I get is: “Should I use white noise for my baby’s sleep?”
Let’s explore how white noise can be a powerful, safe, and soothing tool for infant sleep when used correctly.
Why White Noise Can Help Your Baby Sleep Better

Newborns and infants aren’t used to silence. In fact, the womb is a surprisingly noisy place! The hum of blood flow, heartbeat rhythms, and digestive sounds create a constant stream of noise your baby has grown to find comforting.
Using white noise as part of your baby’s sleep routine can replicate that familiar, rhythmic environment by helping them feel safe and calm.
Here are the top benefits of using white noise for babies:
Promotes Soothing & Settling: The gentle, consistent sound of white noise can help a fussy baby relax and fall asleep faster especially during sleep regressions or unsettled phases.
Extends Sleep Duration: Some studies show that babies sleep longer and more soundly with consistent white noise in the background.
Masks Household Noise: Whether it's barking dogs, traffic, or older siblings, white noise can block out unpredictable environmental sounds that might otherwise wake your little one.
Supports Gentle Sleep Training: White noise is a great companion to gentle sleep strategies, offering an additional layer of comfort and security.
Is White Noise Safe for Babies?
Yes, white noise is safe for babies when used correctly. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers these helpful guidelines to keep your baby’s hearing protected:
Keep a safe distance: Place your white noise machine at least 2.1 meters (7 feet) away from your baby’s cot or sleep space.
Control the volume: Keep the volume under 50 decibels which is about the sound level of a quiet conversation. You can download a decibel meter app to check.
Use only during sleep: Only use white noise during naps and night-time sleep. It’s not recommended to play it throughout the day or during your baby’s awake times.
White noise and brown noise are both excellent options. You can choose based on what your baby responds to best. Some little ones prefer the deeper tones of brown noise.
When Should You Stop Using White Noise?
There’s no hard-and-fast rule. Some adults continue to use white noise for their own sleep!
That said, many babies naturally grow out of needing white noise between 2.5 to 3 years old, once strong sleep habits are well established and they’re less sensitive to background noise. If your little one starts to resist the sound or seems unsettled by it, trust their cues. It is okay to wean off gently.
When used thoughtfully and safely, white noise can be a game-changer for improving your baby’s sleep and supporting gentle sleep training. It helps babies feel secure, sleep more soundly, and settle more easily especially in those early months when everything is new.
